AUT Graduation Project

Opportunity Statement

I have found an opportunity to improve the process of getting glucose through a product that will be used by diabetics and family friends of diabetics. This product should improve the well-being of diabetics experiencing hypoglycemia. It should show human-centred design aspects to ensure the user will know what to do in any situation

How might we...

By reframing problems through question form, may push us to try to answer all issues. In this stage, I am aiming for quantity over quality by getting as many problems as possible.

User Interviews

Through these interviews, I gained a better understanding of how the users would react when in action.

Questionnaires

I created a questionnaire for family and friends of diabetics to help me gain insights on how they would approach situations where they would need to help a diabetic low on glucose.

Two examples of questions and responses are below:

1.

How confident are you with helping a diabetic who needs sugar to be rubbed on their gums?

2.

What would make the process of giving a diabetic sugar easier?

Quick-fire sketches + Clay models

The three highest clay models were my concepts that I would then develop, eventually leading to my chosen concept.

Chosen concept

This concept is most beneficial to users. Main users (diabetic) can twist the cap, place it on the gums, and press the button for honey to come out. However, if the user is experiencing severe symptoms, other users can use it on them based on instincts. I have designed this product based on human-centered design. With the 'gum' like design, users may feel as though they are directed to place it on the diabetic's gums.

Twist cap off

Squeeze for honey

The product stores honey and you are able to refill the product.

Honey is accessible in many homes and is just as sweet as sugar, which does the same job as stabilizing a diabetics sugar levels.
